Church History

Hall Street began with a band of forty stalwart Christians not knowing where they were going.  However, they were filled with a deep and burning desire of the Spirit to organize a church in which they could worship God according to the dictates of their hearts.  It was under a brush arbor in 1903 that this group met and organized the Hall Street Baptist Church.

Under God’s guidance and direction throughout the years, Hall Street has experienced spiritual growth, increased membership, initiated a progressive Christian Education program, implemented firsts for youth programs in the city and state, added Deaf ministry, increased leadership of pastors and other church officers at local, district, state and national levels. Throughout the years the congregation was blessed to complete construction of a new building and later the addition of a two-story Fellowship Hall and ongoing renovations. The church purchased additional property  surrounding and adjacent to the church; paved parking lots; and computerize the   Finance office  and all church library resources.

Community outreach has been a thread of involvement throughout the membership. Both pastors and members of the past have been active in voter registration, and participation in the historic Montgomery Bus Boycott and the Montgomery Improvement Association. During the Bus Boycott, Hall Street Church purchased a station wagon to assist in transporting citizens throughout the city.  The congregation supports several charitable organization in the city including  Partners in Education through financial donations and volunteer services to several schools.

The sacrifices, tears, and sweat of current and deceased members, with God's divine favor, have built a rich heritage for the Hall Street Baptist Church. The Hall Street Church's heritage serves to strengthen our faith, inspire our evangelistic calling, continue to exalt the spirit of love among the church family, and fortify our determination for greater Christian service to all mankind.
